TESCO SUBMITS IMPROVED PLANS FOR SHERINGHAM

Tesco announced this week the submission of a planning application to North Norfolk District Council for a new foodstore in Sheringham.

It follows consultation with the local community which focussed on a public exhibition of the proposals at the Sheringham Community Centre held over two days in July last year.

Using the comments received from the public consultation Tesco is proposing a number of improvements to its development proposals.. In particular;

* Adding refuge islands to the customer access road and on Cromer Road to help people cross the road safely.
* An updated traffic assessment based on survey information from July and August 2006 to reassure local people that traffic calculations take into account the peak summer tourist season.
* The store will close at 10pm, and not midnight.
* Ongoing discussions with the users of the community centre so that the internal specifications of the new centre will meet the needs of those using it.
* Withdrawn the planning application for sheltered bungalows at Weston Terrace Gardens. The District Council has confirmed that it considers a commuted payment in lieu to be a more effective means to address local housing needs.

Tesco Corporate Affairs Manager, Michael Kissman, said;

"Following the public consultation, we reviewed all the comments made to us and are pleased that we have been able to make some significant changes to our scheme in response. This is about getting the detail right for Sheringham."

He added "We were also heartened at the level of public support for the foodstore. We hope that local people will let the Council know their views about the store. From the public consultations we are now sure that at least 2 out of 3 local people support it and hope that majority does not stay silent."

As one of the comments cards left after the public exhibition said;

"I think the proposals you mention for Sheringham now - July '06 - are all excellent - & should be a great asset to the town - I think the "little shops" will be fine as they were when the market came. PLEASE, PLEASE COME - & Good Luck!"
