Dear Sir
I wish to log my support for a new Tesco store in Sheringham. I feel that over the years
our local councillors and also North Norfolk District Council has let the people of
Sheringham and also the people in the surrounding villages down.
The reason for my statement is that by right we should have had a Tesco ten years ago in a
position that the majority of local people wanted but once more the minority rules and
held up the application long enough for government to change their Policy.
I was given a copy of a letter that was published in the Leicester Mercury stating that
the people of Sheringham were fighting Tesco's and trying to keep them out of our Town so
could the people of Leicester please write to the planning officer and object. This letter
gave the planning officers name and address. This is madness gone wrong.
I would like you to consider the elderly on fixed incomes, the young couples with families
who are having to both work to support their way of life and the single parents having to
bring up their family, work, look after their homes and find time to shop outside of
Sheringham in order to buy food at an affordable price, that is if they have transport to
do this. At a planning meeting last year one of the people against Tesco stated that the
local transport, trains or buses could be used to go to Morrisons. This is ridiculous, can
you see any of the above lugging their bags of shopping along with their children home, or
maybe they should go each day. What price the cost of food then?
At one time Sheringham had a wealth of retail shops that sold food items and the
population was half of what it is now so why should you deprive Sheringham and not
forgetting the surrounding villages of a decent food store.
I suggest you read the reports done by Southampton University and also the study in 2004
of Alnwick in Northumberland done by the Newcastle University for Research in
Environmental Appraisal. They stated that. "The result of the survey suggested that
the providing improved shopping services will encourage more people to use Alnwick, and
that this may increase the patronage of other services".
